Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age | Cheryl Bardoe

Descriere si caracteristici

This book is based on the recent discovery of a fully frozen baby mammoth. From it, scientists have learned more than they could have ever known via bones, fossils, etc. What was everyday life like for these colossal animals? What did they eat? How did they fit in to their Ice Age landscape? Why did mammoths and mastodons go extinct? How can studying these creatures from the past impact modern conservation efforts, especially saving elephant populations today? From ice age hunters to contemporary culture, explore what makes these charismatic creatures special in human hearts and minds. Topics include: how Clovis point-armed hunters stalked these elephantine prey; cave art; an 1801 discovery of a mastodon in Kentucky that fueled the patriotism of our young nation and sparked early scientific thought about prehistoric animals; and stories of modern children whose discovery of mammoth and mastodon remains contribute to science.
